Teacher Types and characteristics

There is no way to tell a teacher's "type" simply from their workload or schedule. E1, E3, and E8 exist in all sectors.

  • E1 - Regular teacher

  • E2 - REgular with Special Status

  • These are often teachers well established in their careers.
    These E1 teachers are generally who have been at a single school for many years.
    They are often the more established members of a staff and have many years of experience in how their specific school has operated.
    They are sometimes working (and being paid at) at 80% by making use of partial leaves of absence.
    These E1 teachers only move schools in situations of excess or voluntary transfer.
    Their position is linked to a teaching category and a school.
    They are guaranteed work every September, once tenured.
  • These teachers are usually midcareer and have worked at the Riverside Schoolboard for at least 5 years. 
    These teacher have often just come off the priority list and have worked at several schools recently.
    The E2 teachers always have 100% workloads. 
    They can be moved from school to school in between school years more frequently than E1 teachers.
    Their position is linked to a teaching category only.
    They are guaranteed work every September, once tenured.
  • These teachers are usually early in the career and have worked at the Riverside School board for less than 7 years. 
    E3 teacher can be working to get on the priority list. (Via two contracts in 3 years and a positive evaluation.)

    These teacher can be on the priority list.
    They move generally change schools every school year, or even during the school year.

    The E3 teachers have variable workloads ranging from 20% to 100%.
    They do not have a position, they have a contract.
    They are not guaranteed work beyond their current contract.
  • These teachers are usually early career and have worked at the Riverside School board for less than 7 years. 
    E8 teacher can be working to get on the priority list. (Via two contracts in 3 years and a positive evaluation.)

    These teacher can be on the priority list.
    They move generally change schools every school year, or even during the school year.

    The E8 teachers have variable workloads ranging from 20% to 100%.
    They do not have a position, they have a contract.
    They are not guaranteed work beyond their current contract.
    Their current contract ends when the teacher they are replacing returns, regardless of the time of year, or the end of the school year.
